MC Lyte, a fierce lyrical powerhouse from New York City, shattered glass ceilings in 1988 by becoming the first female rapper to drop a full solo album, "Lyte as a Rock." Her trailblazing didn’t stop there; she joined the supergroup Stop the Violence Movement and lent her voice to the groundbreaking single “Self Destruction,” which soared to the top of the Billboard Hot Rap Singles chart in 1989. Over the years, MC Lyte has collaborated with industry titans like Will Smith, Beyoncé, and Missy Elliott, cementing her status as a hip-hop legend. In 2013, her monumental contributions to the culture were recognized with the Icon Lifetime Achievement “I Am Hip Hop” award at the BET Hip Hop Awards. Beyond the mic, Lyte has proven her versatility with acting roles and her unwavering commitment to philanthropy through the Hip Hop Sisters Foundation, which provides scholarships to college students.
