George Howard, Co-Founder and Head of Music at MAX, is an associate professor of music business and management at Berklee College of Music, a top music business school in the US, and Brown University. The former President of Rykodisc and one of the original founders of TuneCore, Howard holds an MBA and a JD.
Starting this week, the MAX Blog will feature a new educational article every Friday. This educational series is designed to explore the many nuances of a complex music industry and identify resources and tools that can help artist managers navigate the new landscape.
The first installment of this series will shine light on the ever-evolving world of publishing.
After an initial primer on the music publishing world, George will educate on more granular subjects like mechanical licensing, public performance, and syncs.
As Spotify has opened discussions about how songwriters should be compensated for their works, these topics, and specifically mechanical licensing, are critical for artists and managers to understand.
With this education series, MAX and George Howard help those interested and invested in the music industry best understand what’s happening and how it affects them. Questions and recommended music business subjects are encouraged.

The deadline to enter the International Songwriting Competition (ISC) is Wednesday, September 20, 2017. ISC is an annual song contest whose mission is to provide the opportunity for both aspiring and established songwriters to have their songs heard in a professional, international arena.
